Recipe | Cat Friendly Salmon & Prawn Ice Lolly
If your cat is struggling to keep cool during hot weather you can lend a helping hand with homemade frozen treats and plenty of fresh, cold water. Try freezing low salt chicken stock into ice cubes for your kitty to lick or try our super simple cat friendly ice lolly recipe - made with tasty prawns and salmon (pictured above).
Cat Ice Lolly Ingredients
- 1 Raw salmon fillet. Skin on but descaled
- 165g Raw prawns (shrimp) peeled and deveined
- 500ml Water
You will also need:
-
An ice lolly (popsicle) mould
-
A blender
Method
- Put the salmon fillet in a small lidded pan and pour over (approx. 500ml/ 2 cups) of cold water to cover the salmon
- Put the pan on the heat and bring up to a boil with the lid on. Then simmer gently for 5 minutes
- Add the raw prawns to the pan with the salmon and bring back up to boil
- When the salmon is opaque and the prawns are nice and pink take the pan off the heat and leave everything to cool
- Once cool, strain the salmon and prawns into a jug so you reserve the fishy water
- Put the salmon and prawns into a blender with a little of the fishy water and whizz to a loose paste. Keep adding water until you get a pourable consistency. Any left over water can be frozen into cat friendly ice cubes!
- Pour into your ice lolly moulds and place in the freezer to set.
Enjoy!
To avoid freezer burn make sure you take your frozen treats out of the freezer 15 minutes before you present them to your pet. Always check you are not feeding your cat any ingredients that may be toxic or harmful. Stay away from chocolate, grapes, raisins and avocado and don’t give dairy products to cats. If using chicken or fish stock make sure it's a low salt variety or make it at home by boiling bones with no salt added.
This recipe is intended as an occasional treat for your kitty to enjoy in warm weather. We chose prawns and salmon as these ingredients contain lots of healthy oils, protein and vitamins but as with all treats, they should be enjoyed in moderation and as an addition to your cat's usual diet.
